Teaching the kids to cook in the kitchen is often an overlooked subject. It’s the perception of the parents and teachers that cooking is not for kids, which stops them from learning this art. Rather, it’s a fun way for them to develop new skills. General knowledge and nutritional science are some of the subjects which are introduced to the kids when they learn about cooking. Cooking can be a fun activity that increases the family bond as well. Kids love all sorts of cooking activities like chopping, measuring, mixing and assembling[spin] and especially the eating| the sampling once all is done|.
Grown ups often find that bringing kids into kitchen invites trouble and mess. It sure is true; but well planned cooking can be less messy and more of fun. Obviously, the teachers are the one who will have to organize everything for their little chefs!
Getting Started!
Well, this can be quite a hilarious moment which can also test your patience. Kids are highly enthusiastic to know the names of the ingredients. They will keep you asking “what is this” all the time. The key solution is to answer their every question. Try to teach the simple recipes, like cup cakes first. Knives are not the tools which can be provided to the kids for chopping and cutting. Instead, you can try manual food processors for the same. Cupcake recipes don’t need knives at all. Mixing bowls should be larger than the amount of food inside it. That will save your time in cleaning the mess.
Explain and show them the procedures first. Let them try the rest of the time. Help them if they are going wrong somewhere, but let them make mistakes. Kids learn from their mistakes, hence they will excel next time. Though their first attempt fails, don’t let them feel embarrassing or sad about it. Instead, encourage them to make it one more time. Kids get over the failure faster than the adults. So, no need to worry. This will teach them to take failures easily in future life. A good way to teach them the facts of life, isn’t it?
The Happy Ending
Once the recipe is done, you can tell your kid to make some more quantity of the same. This way the whole family can get a part of their success. This of- course depends on the interest of the kid. The kid may loose his interest in cooking after the first recipe. Always appreciate their cooked food. This cheers them up and encourages them to cook more.
When kids learn to cook they can even help you in kitchen. Small work like cutting, chopping, mixing and beating can be done by the kids. However, never let the kids work in the kitchen alone.
